Composite board is used in a variety of home construction projects, including trim, exterior shutters, and other architectural products. Known for its durability and stability, it offers long-lasting resistance to moisture, rot, and insects, making it an excellent material choice for exterior applications.

At Monument Shutters, we use Armorite® Exterior MDF for its strength, consistency, and performance in outdoor environments. Unlike standard MDF designed for interior use, Armorite® is engineered specifically for exterior applications, providing a dense, stable panel that machines cleanly and holds up well in demanding conditions. Composite is a paint-grade material and must be properly painted and finished with an exterior-grade sealer coat to ensure long-term protection and performance.

What Is Composite Board?

Composite board is an engineered wood product made by combining wood fibers with resins under heat and pressure to create a dense, stable panel. These materials are designed to provide consistency, strength, and improved performance compared to many traditional wood products.

One common type of composite board is Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF). MDF is manufactured from refined wood fibers that are bonded together with resins and compressed under high pressure and heat. The result is a smooth, uniform material that machines easily and maintains consistent density throughout the panel.

At Monument Shutters, we use Armorite® Exterior MDF, which is specifically engineered for exterior applications. Unlike standard MDF designed for interior use, Armorite® is manufactured to withstand outdoor conditions and provides improved resistance to moisture, rot, and insects.

Composite materials like Armorite® are commonly used in exterior architectural products because they provide strength, stability, and reliable performance when properly painted and finished with an exterior-grade sealer coat.

Benefits of Composite Board

Composite board offers several advantages that make it a strong choice for exterior shutter applications:

Consistent Material
Engineered wood panels have a uniform density and structure, allowing for precise machining and consistent performance.

Cost Effective
Composite materials are often more affordable than solid hardwood while still providing excellent durability.

Durability
Composite board provides long-lasting stability and resistance to moisture, rot, and insects when properly finished.

Dimensional Stability
Because it is manufactured under controlled conditions, composite board maintains its shape well and is less prone to natural inconsistencies found in solid wood.
